Why ‘Meeting Half Way’?

As you would have learned from yesterday’s introduction to Meeting Half Way, we (as hearing people) know very little about the challenges faced by Deaf people and, more importantly, do very little to accommodate for them.

Meeting Half Way, therefore, is a name which best describes the goals which the campaign is trying to achieve. Those goals are to help us recognise how much Deaf people do to meet our needs, learn about their needs and Meet Half Way by accommodating for them in whatever way we can.

(For reference, the name was inspired by the statement of a Deaf person who, in defending his/her right to be disheartened by the attitudes of hearing people, stated the efforts made by Deaf people and asking ‘why they can’t meet us half way?’)

I hope we can change this and meet them half way.

I think this is a really good initiative. I hope it gets the reaction and feedback you are hoping for.

My 1 year old had some problem in his eyes the other day. It was quite serious and although everything is fine know, I kept and keep thinking ‘what if he had lost his sight?’. How changed and difficult his life would have become. From there I kept thinking what if any child or person lost their sight, hearing, ability to speak and it’s so difficult to even fathom.

I think anyone who can hear should stop and think what even a day with out their ability to hear would be like as just a starting point to even beginning to understand the difficulty that deaf people go through everyday.

    Good luck!
